The South West and Oyo state Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, popularly known as Fele was on Wednesday morning buried at his Elebu house, Ibadan, amidst tears, wailings by family members, colleagues and associates. His remains, led by the Osun state chairman of the union, Mr Folorunso Olalekan, a.k.a Lekan Salam was conveyed to his palatial home in Ibadan at exactly 9:19 am, in a white Toyota Hiace ambulance with registration number Abuja RAHIS 8. A recent ruling by Canada’s refugee board makes it harder for Nigerians to be granted asylum, and refugee lawyers are unhappy about how unfair it is. The Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL) is dragging the Canadian government to court over a recent court ruling that will make it hard for Nigerians to be granted asylum in the North American country. According to a report by New York Times, the association is displeased with the recent decision of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) to establish as a legal precedent its ruling to deny a Nigerian woman’s asylum request. The unnamed Nigerian woman was denied asylum even though she claimed she fled Nigeria to escape the practice of female genital mutilation. The court ruled that she could have sought refuge away from her rural family home in any of Nigeria’s large cities of Ibadan or Port Harcourt, and not necessarily run all the way to Canada. An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Olawale Oba , has said that low acceptance of instrumental delivery techniques often leads to the increase of caesarean delivery . Oba, a Senior Registrar at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, made the explanation in an interview on Wednesday . He said that caesarean section , also known as caesarean delivery, involves the use of surgery to deliver babies , which was often necessary when vaginal delivery could put the baby or mother at risk. “ Even though , there is cap by the World Health Organisation on caesarean section rate which should be around 20 to 25 per cent but this incidence has been on the increase. “ It is important to note that instead of doing a caesarean section , in some cases , instruments can also be used to bring out babies from the vagina . “ But due to low acceptability of these instruments and increased rate of litigation , where people are gradually moving away fro

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Monday, stopped Multichoice Nigeria Limited from proceeding with its decision to increase DSTV subscription tariff. The court, in a ruling by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, issued the restraining order based on a suit that was lodged by the Consumer Protection Council, CPC. CPC had in a public interest suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/894/18, applied for an interim injunction restraining Multichoice Nigeria or its agents and representatives from continuing the implementation of any increase in subscription rates or price review policy imposing increased charges and costs on its customers, pending the determination of the motion on notice before the court. The Council further persuaded the court to accelerate hearing of the matter. In a nine-paragraph affidavit that was attached to the suit, CPC, maintained that it has the constitutional responsibility to protect the welfare and interest of consumers in Nigeria. A woman has taken to social media to expose a driver who allegedly stole her iPhone after her return from the United Kingdom. The woman who hails from Edo state, revealed that her friend’s driver stole her iPhone after entering his car. After trying to recover the phone all to no avail, the woman promised the alleged phone thief that she would give him N100,000 if he returns the phone to her. In the process of returning the phone, the suspect and his alleged accomplice were nabbed by the police. The iPhone 10 was already disabled as at the time of recovery as it was alleged that the suspected thief tried to open it. The suspects are currently being held at the station.  The woman who revealed that she is yet to pay fully for the iPhone which is worth about £1,250 (over N620,000) – said that the gadget was stolen just one week of her return to Nigeria after boarding the suspect’s car. Ngige, who stated this at a press briefing in Obosi, in the Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State , also said there was no truth in the news that the Federal Government was planning to increase monthly allowance of corps members . While stating that the committee saddled with the responsibility to work out the modalities for the new wage had been up and about , Ngige said the Nigerian Governors ’ Forum had not been able to come up with any figure as a minimum wage they could pay . A journalist and publisher of Weekly Source, a local tabloid based in Bayelsa State , Mr Jones Abiri , on Tuesday, returned to Yenagoa , the state capital, and relived his ordeal in the hands of the Department for State Services. Abiri, who was received at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists by journalists and leaders of the Civil Liberties Organisation, said he was arrested in his office , detained for seven days in DSS cell in Yenagoa and later blindfolded and flown to Abuja . He said he was kept incommunicado in an underground DSS cell in Abuja and denied access to medical treatment for about two years. A young girl who was kidnapped when she was 2 years old has been found four years later. Onyinyechi Okpala went missing on 30th November 2014, when she and her mother went for an end of the year party which was hosted by her uncle named “Taribo” in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. A search was conducted but the girl wasn’t found as months turned to years. Yesterday, 20th August 2018, the little girl, who is now 6, was found by the Imo state police who busted a child trafficking syndicate. A total of eleven stolen children were recovered from the suspects some of whom have been identified by their parents. The Imo State Police Command have arrested eight suspects in connection with child stealing and trafficking.
