UNICEF says 25,685 babies will be born in Nigeria today TheUnited Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has estimated that 25,685 babies would be born in Nigeria on New Year Day. Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Nigeria’s Acting Representative revealed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja. He said that the figure placed the country’s babies as making up 6.5 per cent of the estimated 395,072 babies that would be born on the day globally. Ironside noted that within Africa, Nigerian babies would account for almost 40 per cent of all those born in West and Central Africa, and more than 23 per cent of those born in sub-Saharan Africa. “Globally, over half of the world’s births are estimated to take place in just eight countries, including Nigeria. ”Others are: India 69,944, China 44,940 Pakistan 15,112, Indonesia 13,256, United States 11,086, the Democratic Republic of Congo 10,053 and Bangladesh 8,428.” According to him, on current life...

An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Olawale Oba , has said that low acceptance of instrumental delivery techniques often leads to the increase of caesarean delivery . Oba, a Senior Registrar at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, made the explanation in an interview on Wednesday . He said that caesarean section , also known as caesarean delivery, involves the use of surgery to deliver babies , which was often necessary when vaginal delivery could put the baby or mother at risk. “ Even though , there is cap by the World Health Organisation on caesarean section rate which should be around 20 to 25 per cent but this incidence has been on the increase. “ It is important to note that instead of doing a caesarean section , in some cases , instruments can also be used to bring out babies from the vagina . “ But due to low acceptability of these instruments and increased rate of litigation , where people are gradually moving away fro...

The Minister of Health , Prof. Isaac Adewole , has urged husbands to stop struggling with their babies over breasts , but rather allow their wives to put the babies on exclusive breast milk . This is just as the minister revealed that he was having talks with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to extend maternity leave from the current four months to six . Magdalena Malec, 31, had to have both of her legs, her right arm and the fingers of her left hand amputated after contracting the disease in hospital. She also needed a kidney transplant to save her life after being admitted with an ectopic pregnancy. Bosses at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital have now apologised for the medical blunder, which they accept could have been completely avoided . A father - of - two has revealed that 90 per cent of his body was left covered in burns and he was temporarily blinded after a reaction to antibiotics . Josh Dennis , 38, was prescribed the drugs to cure a staph infection in his jaw. He noticed irritation and itching under his finger nails , before he came out in hives and within a week, he was in a burns unit in Holly, Colorado. Josh said : “ Over 90 per cent of my body was affected. Perhaps the worst part that I haven’ t talked about was the genitals. “ My scrotum looked like a brain oozing pus. A neurosurgeon has been suspended for opening up the head of the wrong patient in one of the worst cases of medical malpractice to become public at Kenyatta National Hospital. Two men had been wheeled into KNH unconscious last Sunday. One needed head surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain, while the other only required nursing and medication to heal a trauma swelling in his head , medically known as closed head injury . However, a horror mix- up of identification tags saw the wrong man wheeled into theatre and his skull opened . Doctors did not realise the mistake until hours into the surgery when they discovered there was no blood clot in the brain of the man sprawled on the operating table .
