President Muhammadu Buhari has rejected the proposed Peace Corps of Nigeria establishment Bill. The president conveyed his rejection of the bill in a letter to the House of Representatives. Speaker Yakubu Dogara read the letter to colleagues during plenary, on Tuesday. The National Assembly passed the bill in 2015, after a prolonged battle involving the organisation and the nation’s security agencies. While explaining his rejection of the bill, the president cited security concerns and financial burden of funding the organisation by the government as his reasons.

A 12-year-old Chinese boy may be one of the most lonely pupils on the planet – he has no classmates or schoolmates for the past few years now. The boy living in northeast China’s Jilin Province took part in the opening ceremony days ago to welcome the new semester, along with his two teachers. Wang Hao is the only student of Li Village Primary School, which is located at Gongzhuling City with over 1,000 villagers in about 400 families. The school used to have dozens teachers and more than 200 students, according to Wang Lixin, an authority of the village. Teachers’ retirement and students’ transfers led to the decline in the number of students and teachers. Despite this, the self-study courses in the morning and the other seven courses, including Chinese, English and math, have been rolled out on a daily basis. As the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) finally begins its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, February 27, reports say the party’s headquarters has been taken over by heavily armed security agents. It was reported that as early as 6am, truckloads of armed soldiers and policemen set up security barricades and checkpoints at the main entrance and exit of Blantyre Street, the location of the party’s national secretariat. The report said President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the 24 governors on the platform of the APC are expected at the meeting. Currently, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Bello Masari, and Umar Ganduje, his counterparts in Katsina and Kano have reportedly arrived the venue of the meeting. Akure—An Ordinary National Diploma, OND, holder in Mechanical Engineering, Desmond Fadamitan, paraded alongside other suspected robbers by Ondo State Police Command yesterday, burst into tears, saying he has brought disgrace to his family. Others paraded along with him are Olayemi Adeoye, the mastermind, and Roland Imafidon. Desmond said “I regret my action. I have made a big mistake in my life and I have brought shame to my family.” Asked to give details about his family members, the suspect said “I come from a much-respected family and I have brought shame to them,” but declined to say who is father or mother is. However, it was gathered from a Police source that he is the son of an important personality. The other suspect, Olayemi, a welder, when asked what pushed him into crime, said: “It is business now. No fewer than 105 students may be missing in the aftermath of Monday’s invasion of the Government Girls’ Science Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, it was gathered that The names were personally submitted to the school’s authorities by the parents of the affected students, according to the Chairman, Forum of Parents of the missing Dapchi Girls, Mallam Bashir Manzo. The list obtained contains the name of each missing student, her local government area and telephone numbers of her parents. A mix of tension and mourning pervaded the community for the fifth day running yesterday when The Nation visited the area. Residents said it was clear from the behavior of invaders on Monday that their mission was solely to abduct the students.
