Residents flee as Boko Haram take over Borno communities There has been mass movement of people out of communities in Borno State through Damaturu the Yobe State capital to Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kebbi and Jigawa states. Residents told our correspondent, the Boko Haram insurgents, who attacked some communities in Borno, were targeting soldiers. Boko Haram had last week overran Baga, Doron-Baga, Kross Kawwa, Bunduran, Kekeno and Kukawa towns of Borno State after three days of intense fighting. Mallam Bukar Kachalla and Mr. Abacha Musa told one of our correspondents on the phone on Monday that since late Saturday there has been a mass movement of people through Dapchi and Damaturu to other neigbouring states like Jigawa, Kebbi, Bauchi, Zamfara and Gombe. Two men were allegedly killed by drunk policemen in the early hours of today during new year celebration in Edo State. The incident reportedly happened at Kings square, Benin, Edo. According to an eyewitness, Alpha, the drunk policemen were also trying to celebrate by firing gunshots into the air at their station opposite the Oba market, but instead opened fire on the duo. One of the victims reportedly died immediately on the spot while the other lost his life moments later as he was not able to get appropriate first aid to keep him alive. A truck carrying diesel just ran into vehicles along the Gbagada – Iyana Oworo bridge crushing five cars. According to an eyewitness, no one died but several people were injured. LASTMA officials who are now on ground confirmed the accident saying, ‘there’s a multiple accident involving a loaded tanker and 5 vehicles at the descend of Gbagada bridge and recovery work is on-going at the moment’. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against taking sides in the general elections. In its New Year message yesterday, the association urged government not to involve the military in the polls, to prevent voter intimidation. It also tasked the police, the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, and other security agencies not to compromise standards by working for desperate politicians. Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has reconsidered her earlier threats not to support her husband, Muhammadu Buhari in his second term bid if certain things were not changed. Mrs Buhari drew worldwide attention when she criticised her husband in an October 2016 interview with the BBC, saying she feared his administration was veering from its mandate to the people. She also expressed doubt that she would support him if he seeks re-election unless he implemented immediate changes in personnel and policies.
